Twin Valley Fiber Internet Is Live in Burden, Kansas

September 10, 2026

Burden fiber internet provider

Long before the Twin Valley name appeared on trucks and signs in Burden, this community was home to Southern Kansas Telephone Company (SKT). In 1940, Edwin and Dorothy Mikesell purchased the Burden, Atlanta and Dexter telephone exchanges, established the company’s general office in downtown Burden and began what would become generations of connecting rural Kansans.

More than 80 years later, that history became part of Twin Valley’s story. Twin Valley acquired SKT in April 2021, bringing together two family-owned Kansas communications companies with remarkably similar roots. Both began serving rural Kansas communities in the 1940s, both grew by investing in areas often overlooked by larger providers, and both built cultures centered around hometown service, innovation and long-term commitment to their communities. As the two teams came together, those shared values helped make the partnership a natural fit.

SKT officially transitioned to the Twin Valley brand in 2023, but the people, history and commitment behind the former SKT organization remain an important part of who Twin Valley is today.

Now, more than 85 years after Southern Kansas Telephone Company began in Burden, we’re proud to continue that legacy with a fiber network built to serve the community for generations to come.

Familiar Faces Serving Burden and Rural Southeastern Kansas

The name on our trucks may have changed from SKT to Twin Valley, but many of the people behind your connection have been serving these communities for years.

Operations team members Matt Tatum, Joe Manuele and Jerald Morgan serve Burden and communities throughout this part of rural southeastern Kansas. They know the roads, towns and people that make this area home.

For Matt, Burden is home in the most literal sense. Matt joined SKT in 2008 and continued with the team through the transition to Twin Valley. He and his family live in Burden, and outside of work you may recognize him through his involvement with the local school board, 4-H activities and other community efforts.

That community connection is an important part of what survived the transition from SKT to Twin Valley. We continue to have employees who live, work, volunteer and raise their families in the same rural communities our network serves.

Twin Valley also continues to operate from the Burden warehouse, keeping an operational presence in the community where Southern Kansas Telephone Company got its start.

We Appreciate Our Loyal Customers

A lot has changed since Edwin and Dorothy Mikesell began Southern Kansas Telephone Company in Burden in 1940.

Telephone switchboards gave way to broadband. Copper networks are giving way to fiber. SKT and Twin Valley became one team, bringing together two generations-long histories of connecting rural Kansas.

What hasn’t changed is the importance of reliable communications to communities like Burden or the value of having a provider committed to serving them for the long haul. We’re grateful to our Burden neighbors for their patience throughout construction, proud of the SKT history that began here and excited to continue investing in what comes next. Thank you for choosing a local, family owned internet provider.
