Gig Service Coming Soon to a Rural Clearwater Neighborhood

May 28, 2021

SKT will soon offer fiber internet service with up to 1 Gbps (1,000 Mbps) in the Dutch Hill neighborhood and nearby homes. When it comes to broadband, fiber is the most reliable internet option, and 1 Gbps is the top speed offered in the industry.

We will announce packages and pricing soon, and a Customer Service Representative will review these with eligible customers. There will be multiple options to fit every budget and bandwidth requirement. With these new packages, customers can expect to have a better value, with more bandwidth for their money.

Frequently Asked Questions for Eligible Homeowners

  • When will the project begin and what can I expect?

    Week of June 14, 2021

SKT technicians will mount a box called an Optical Network Terminal (ONT) on the exterior of your home. The ONT measures 12 inches x 10 inches x 4 inches. In addition, there will be a box installed to supply power to the ONT. This box will also contain a battery backup in case of a power outage. It measures 8 inches x 7 inches x 4 inches. If you would like to discuss the location of these boxes on your home and/or to be onsite at the time of installation, contact us at 888.758.8976 or by using the form at the bottom of this page before noon on Friday, June 11.

    Late June Through July

The next step is burying the fiber optic line and connecting it to your home. It will not be necessary for you to be present while this work is being performed. During this time, you will be contacted to discuss your SKT services and to schedule an appointment to move your services to your new fiber connection.

  • Who will I see working in my area while this project is underway?

SKT technicians will perform portions of the work; however, due to the large scope of this project, SKT has hired EPI Communications Consultants to assist with the engineering design and Wichita Electric Company to help with construction needs. All SKT contractors will be easily identifiable, and their vehicles will display our logo.

  • What is fiber internet?

Fiber to the Premises (FTTP) refers to the installation and use of fiber optic cables to carry digital information directly to homes and businesses. These cables can contain anywhere from one to hundreds of individual fibers, which are long, thin strands of pure glass about the diameter of a human hair.

  • Will fiber change how my current SKT services work?

Fiber will replace the infrastructure that currently provides telephone and DSL internet services in your neighborhood. You will see no change in the way your telephone service works. SKT high-speed internet customers will no longer need an internet modem, as the ONT eliminates the need for one.

  • What are the benefits of fiber?

    Bandwidth Capacity

Think of how your internet usage has evolved during the last few years. If you’re like most people, you have dozens of internet-connected devices in your home, each using a range of bandwidth depending on the use of the device. Now imagine how much bandwidth you will need in two, five, or even 10 years. Fiber optic cable will allow the transport of virtually unlimited bandwidth to meet your needs today and into the future.

    Service Reliability

Fiber optic cable is tremendously reliable and has greater tolerance of conditions that can negatively affect copper or coaxial lines, such as temperature fluctuations, severe weather, moisture, and interference from electronics and radio signals.

    Future Flexibility

We can only imagine what future technology needs will be, but fiber is a big step in preparing to meet those needs.

Our Pledge

SKT was recently acquired by Twin Valley Management, bringing together the two largest family-owned broadband and communications companies in Kansas. Twin Valley is also the parent company to Twin Valley Telephone, Twin Valley Communications, and ISG Technology.

Twin Valley and SKT are developing a set of commitments to all their communities and customers. This will come in the form of a pledge, built upon four core areas of focus. Read the full letter from our new President & CEO, Ben Foster. This upgrade is one of our first initiatives that hits on the first three commitments in our pledge:
