Fall is finally in the air and that means Elk Falls is moving forward for their 23rd annual Outhouse Tour, November 16 and 17. It’s always the Friday and Saturday before Thanksgiving when this resourceful little community kicks off the holiday season by sprucing up their privies! It’s a fun family festival with a quirky theme but a light-hearted experience. In addition to the self-guided tour, there is a Quilt Show, Harvest Craft Show, Reach for the Sky bluegrass band (Sat. only), Chili cook off, and Homer Allison Outhouse collection at the one room school house. New this year will be a Vintage Camper Show. The famous apple dumplings will be served this year from a newly retrofitted camper. Several local businesses will also be hosting open houses and of course there will be plenty of good food, including Mexican, homemade soups, pies, burgers, chicken and noodles, ham and beans, and specialty desserts.
Over 20 outhouses will be on display. Start at the Outhouse Headquarters downtown where Outhouse buttons, maps, and ballots will be available. A button is required to be able to vote for the winning privy and of course everyone is encouraged to vote, no matter which side of the pot you’re on! Cash prizes are awarded to the top three as well as the coveted Outhouse Throne Award being presented to the first place winner, which has been passed around to the winners since 1996. This year’s competition will again be strong with many new entries including one long movement from Pittsburg! Winners will be posted on the Get Elk Falls Facebook page and elkfallsouthousetour.com. Turn off FOX, turn off CNN, turn on your sense of humor and get ready to LOL!
