During this spring of social distancing, at least two communities within the SKT service area have resurrected the tradition of “dragging main” – Howard, Kan., and Clearwater, Kan. As the days turn into weeks of social distancing, many people just want a chance to get out of the house and feel connected to their friends and community in a safe way. It’s also a chance for many to relive the nostalgic tradition and share it with the younger generation.

Mostly organized on Facebook pages, and perhaps word-of-mouth, Howard’s began with a post:

The idea had been tossed about for a while and there’s no going back now! Cruise Nights in Howard are set for every Saturday at 7 p.m. through May 16 – the date of West Elk High School’s now cancelled graduation. Prizes will be awarded, and the ice cream cone offer stands.

The administrator of the recently established “Clearwater United Together” Facebook page posted:

The word got out, and Rosie the Rabbit, mascot of the Clearwater Pharmacy on Ross Avenue, was even on hand – waving to her fans as only rabbits can do.

The following Sunday, March 29, at 5 p.m. classic cars were expected to join in the second Cruise Night.

One “cruiser” posted a video of dragging main while listening to Clearwater-native Logan Mize’s recently released song “Hometown.” The music video features the town of Clearwater as Logan reminisces about missing his childhood home. You can watch it here:

Organizers are quick to remind participants to practice social distancing; don’t get out of your cars, only ride with people who live in your home, drive safely – being sure to observe all the normal rules of traffic, including seat belt use, and no gathering anywhere. Just drag main, smile, and wave.
